Tower crane takes its place above Powerhouse

A 124 -metre tall tower crane now stands over Powerhouse Ultimo, signalling the start of construction on the Museum’s new building and bringing the revitalised museum one step closer to reality.

The largest piece of equipment to be installed on the project, the crane will now a play a central role in driving construction forwards, and upwards!

The installation of the crane was a major feat. Completed in late August by a specialist crane and rigging crew, the entire operation involved 17 truck deliveries, two mobile cranes and more than 40 workers.

Its special luffing jib design is perfect for the constrained urban environment in Ultimo. Extending to an impressive 82-metres at full reach, the crane supports work in both the northern and southern areas.  With a lifting capacity of 27.5 tonnes, it is already moving heavy materials safely and efficiently across the entire site.
