About the project

Powerhouse Museum Ultimo is one of Australia’s most revered museums

The NSW Government unveiled the revised concept design for the $250 million heritage revitalisation of the Powerhouse Museum in December 2023

The heritage revitalisation will deliver refurbished exhibition spaces and new and expanded public domain, connecting Powerhouse Museum Ultimo to the Sydney CBD, The Goods Line and adjacent cultural precincts, and will retain the 1988 Wran building.

Powerhouse Museum Ultimo will continue to deliver an applied arts and sciences program, presenting exhibitions that showcase the Powerhouse collection, international exhibitions and programs that support the creative industries.

Infrastructure NSW (INSW) is leading the design and delivery of the project on behalf of the NSW Government, in partnership with the Powerhouse Museum.

The revised concept design for the Powerhouse Museum Ultimo Revitalisation was developed by architects Durbach Block Jaggers partnering with Architectus, Tyrrell Studio and Youssofzay + Hart.

Where we are now

The NSW Government has appointed Richard Crookes Constructions to deliver the main works construction.

Planning approval was finalised in March 2025.

Site preparation works continues this year. Once a detailed construction plan is finalised and main works start, it is expected to take approximately three years to complete the project.
