Planning tick of approval for Powerhouse Ultimo Renewal
Powerhouse Museum, Ultimo has taken the next step towards transformation with the first stage of planning consent granted to enable the renewal of the iconic museum.
The concept planning consent is a major milestone for the project, with the winning design for the renewal of the museum announced after a national Design Competition was held late last year.
The concept designed by Australian team Architectus, Durbach Block Jaggers Architects, Tyrrell Studio, Youssofzay + Hart, Akira Isogawa, Yerrabingin, Finding Infinity and Arup was chosen in December 2022 by an expert jury.
The renewal of the museum will deliver refurbished and expanded museum exhibition and public spaces, supporting the Powerhouse to deliver an applied arts and applied sciences program whilst continuing to present the museums extraordinary collection of over 500,000 objects.
The design features a new public square that will connect the museum to The Goods Line and surrounding precincts, increasing public open space, while the Harris Street frontage will be revitalised with creative industry studios to support museum programs and access to the museum’s library and archives.
The community can have their say and participate in consultation to inform the detailed design and planning application until Friday 10 March 2023.
