Modification 1 determined

Modification 1 to the previously approved State Significant Development Application (SSDA) for the revitalisation of Powerhouse Museum in Ultimo was determined on 19 November 2025 by the NSW Minister for Planning and Public Space.

This milestone means essential works can continue to progress that will ensure Powerhouse Ultimo remains a world-class cultural destination for decades to come.

Why is the modification needed?

The Wran and Galleria buildings have reached the end of their life and require significant upgrades. Advice was provided by all three construction companies tendering for the project that the existing steel structures needed to be dismantled and replaced to guarantee safety of construction workers and ongoing structural building integrity.

What will Modification 1 deliver?

  • Replacement of non-compliant steel structures in the Wran and Galleria buildings

  • A revised loading strategy

  • Minor design amendments to support construction and heritage compliance.

These changes will ensure the project continues to honour its heritage, comply with the State Heritage Listing on scale and form, and create a revitalised Powerhouse Ultimo that can be enjoyed for generations to come.

The determination can be viewed on the NSW Planning Portal

With this approval, we look forward to early works progressing and main works construction commencing in 2026.
